It’s never been more important to control the cleanliness of your home. With viruses and bacteria becoming more and more dangerous, you need to implement even more effective cleaning strategies to combat their presence. You may have a diligent cleaning regimen down to a science, but are you thinking about the air you breathe too?
The air inside your home is more concentrated than outside making the risk of catching viruses and bacteria much higher. Cavalry Air Care understands this, and that’s why we’re offering the most effective solution to your air quality concerns: UV light kits. Keep reading to find out how UV light actually works and how you can use it to keep your air cleaner than ever!
Ultraviolet Light: What The Heck Is It?
Light is measured in wavelengths and frequency. Long vs short wavelengths and low vs high frequency determine what kind of light is present. There are many kinds of light on the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible and invisible light! Ultraviolet (UV) light is one of the invisible kinds of light. It has a high frequency, meaning it is made of higher energy levels.
There are three different kinds of UV light wavelengths: UVA, UVB and UVC.
UVA light has the lowest frequency of these three and is the range of light that contains blacklights. If you’ve ever turned on a blacklight or been to an event where blacklights were used, you know how it makes lighter-colored materials glow.
UVB light has a little higher frequency. We’re most familiar with this kind of light when we get sunburns from being outside too long. This light is also responsible for causing skin cancer!
UVC light has an even higher frequency than UVB, which gives it the ability to damage cells. This is the kind of light emitted from UV lamps and light kits.
Why Does UVC Light Kill Germs?
While UVB light reaches the Earth in the form of sunlight, UVC light is blocked in the atmosphere by the ozone layer. This means that all life on Earth — from the smallest microorganisms t all the way up to humans — has evolved without exposure to UVC light. We never formed a defense against it, and that’s why it can be so effective in eliminating living bacteria and viruses.
When exposed to UVC light, bacteria, viruses and fungi take damage to their DNA. The DNA is what allows these microorganisms to replicate, spread and infect people. When their DNA is damaged, they are unable to complete this process. No replication means a hard stop on germs and protection against infection!
In fact, viruses in particular are extremely susceptible to UVC light and the damage it causes. Viruses are pretty smart and can often evolve to repair the damage they receive from common chemical sanitizers, but it’s different with UVC light. The damage done by UVC happens on a cellular level, making repairs and evolution much more difficult for the virus. UV lights for HVAC use the natural process that this form of UV light is capable of as a chemical-free, natural air purification option.
